FAQ
We have provided answers to some of our patients’ most commonly asked questions, so you will know what to expect when you come to our clinic. If you would like additional information, please contact us directly by phone or email and we will be happy to answer your questions.
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
You do not need a doctor’s referral to make an appointment with any of the therapists at ProActive Health. However, some insurance companies do require you to submit a doctor’s referral with your claim form. Please check with your insurance provider to confirm the details of your coverage and find out what documentation they require to reimburse your claim.
What should I expect on my first visit?
- We will require you to fill out some important patient forms on your first visit so please arrive 10 minutes early to complete this process.
- On your first visit, you will meet with your therapist for an assessment. An assessment involves several important steps, including a medical history, a review of your medical reports and a physical examination.
- Your therapist will discuss the results of the assessment with you, explain your proposed treatment plan and work with you to establish treatment goals.
How should I dress for my appointments?
We recommend that you wear loose, comfortable clothing, such as shorts and a tank top or loose T-shirt to your appointment. To assess and treat you properly, your therapist may ask you to remove or lift up certain articles of clothing. Try to wear clothing that exposes your painful areas and makes them easily accessible for your therapist.
How long will each treatment last?
Treatment times will vary, depending on the type of treatment you are receiving and the nature of your injury.
Will my injury or pain improve right away?
Everyone’s response to treatment is different. Some people immediately notice a reduction in pain and improved function/mobility. Other people take a little longer to respond and may require more than one session before they see improvement. Some people also experience tenderness in the affected areas after treatment but this reaction usually settles quickly.
All of these reactions are normal. It is important to pay attention to your treatment responses and discuss them with your therapist. Your feedback will help your therapist fine-tune the treatment plan as your needs change.
How do you monitor my progress?
Every appointment at ProActive Health is one-on-one with your therapist. At the beginning of each session, your therapist will ask questions about your progress and then re-evaluate you, making note of any changes or improvements. Based on your progress and the status of your injury, your treatment plan may be adjusted to help you achieve the best treatment results in the shortest time possible.
Your updated treatment plan may include:
- Hands-on therapies
- Motor learning exercises
- Massage therapy
- Further assessment (such as a breathing evaluation or ultrasound imaging)
- Acupuncture and/or Dry Needling
- Other complementary therapies
How can I work more effectively with my therapist?
Treatment at ProActive Health is a collaborative effort. To get the full benefit of your treatment, it’s important to communicate with your therapist and follow your treatment plan. You will be expected to do your exercises as prescribed, to be honest if you haven’t kept up with your exercises and to pay close attention to your symptoms, including when they are better/worse. We value your input and take it very seriously. We are here to work with and for you, so you can get better faster and stay better longer.

My doctor has referred me to another clinic. May I still come to ProActive Health?
Yes. You have the right to choose the clinic and therapist that suits your needs best. Your doctor can make a recommendation but the final decision is up to you. With so many rehabilitation clinics in the area, your doctor may not be aware of the exceptional quality of care we provide at ProActive Health.
We would be happy to send information about our clinic to your doctor. If you agree, we will also send details of your assessment and treatment plan and provide updates on your progress, so that your doctor can keep your patient file up to date.
Do you accept referrals?
Yes, we always welcome new patients. We appreciate it when you refer your family, friends and colleagues to ProActive Health – it is the most meaningful compliment you can give us.
If you are happy with our services, we also invite you to write a review. Your feedback helps us grow and improve our clinic, so that we can serve you better. With your permission, we may use your review online.
Can I come to your clinic to learn how to prevent injuries?
Yes, you can! We are deeply committed to injury prevention and encourage you to come to our clinic to learn the best techniques to avoid injuries and achieve your full potential. We can conduct an assessment and identify any areas that may be vulnerable to injury.
Whether you’re an armchair athlete or an elite competitor, the principles of injury prevention are the same: you need a stable core, strong body awareness, good muscle control, a full range of motion in your joints and soft tissues, and proper body alignment.
We can develop a customized program of exercise and core training that will help you improve these areas, depending on your needs and activity level. We also have innovative diagnostic tools, such as ultrasound imaging and breathing analysis, that will give you immediate biofeedback to enhance your body awareness and help you train more effectively.
